Background

Residential School for Children of Female Sex Workers of Mumbai

Since 1991 we are working with the community of poor female sex workers for HIV/AIDS prevention and care program and we came to know that the tender aged girls were also dragged in to prostitution. To overcome this pathetic situation, we have started enrolling the children in the nearby public school for their betterment and break this vicious circle. Despite this because of unconducive atmosphere in the brothel and their area the children are not completing their education and dropping out from the education stream. Hence objective of the progress of the children is not fulfilled. To mitigate this adverse situation it is proposed by us to set up a Residential school in Kuhe Village and shift these children thereat so that they will remain away from their existing brothel area/ living area, study well and show satisfactory progress to come up in the life.

Children of Tribal Community

Since last ten years we are helping for the educational progress for children tribal community in Z.P. School Kuhe. We noticed that in the nearby Kuhe village there are other 4 villages viz. Bhuishet, Chimbipada, Dhamne and Palivali. In these 5 villages there are 5 public schools having standard 1st to 8th. According to our survey in these 5 schools we have learnt that average 20 students straight available in every school. The aggregate of these 8th standard students stands to 100. Since there is only one Public Residential school having educational facilities of standard 9th and 10th. In this school existing average 100 students are studying in 9th and 10th and hence there is very little scope to add new students in this strength. However, on humanitarian ground the school is giving admission to new students from these 5 villages maximum up to 10 students in 9th and 10th standard on merit. Due to this a large number of students passing 8th standard every year from these 5 villages facing extreme problem of studying in 9th standard onwards. Some of the parents who can afford cost of sending children to Bhiwandi and other places for the education 9th standard and above are taking admission for 9th standard elsewhere. The number of the children stands to 40 hence nearly 50 children are unable to take admission in 9 standards elsewhere due to their poor economic condition and therefore forced to drop out from the educational stream and losing the opportunity of progress in their life. Among these dropped out children number of girls are quite higher and the situation is causing hindrance to the development of girls and also causing injustice to them.
