MISSION EDUCATION PROJECT:

Educational support for Children of Sex Workers

This project aims to break the intergenerational cycle of prostitution and ensures that discriminated and marginalized children of commercial sex workers (CSWs) have opportunities for a healthy and safe future.

  • Started in 2002, supporting children from marginalized communities in Mumbai's red-light areas.
  • Annual identification and enrollment of out-of-school children into public schools.
  • Comprehensive support: education, nutrition, hygiene, and personal development.

How the Project Works

  1. Children are identified in red-light areas and enrolled in public schools after counseling mothers on the importance of education.
  2. Daily school attendance is ensured, with a school van transporting children to the SAI Education Club (Day Care Centre) after school.
  3. Children receive nutritious meals, hygiene support, and academic assistance from dedicated teachers for both primary and secondary sections.
  4. Regular assessments, tests, and exams are conducted to monitor progress.
  5. Mothers are engaged through meetings and guidance to support their children's education and well-being.

Extra-Curricular Activities

  • Idol making, dance, singing, acting, drawing, and hand-craft workshops.
  • Role-play and motivational sessions with prominent women during festivals.
  • Environmental drives, sports, picnics, and birthday celebrations for every child.

Impact

By paying special attention towards the weak students in their studies they show progress in their studies & regularly attend school & Mission education Project. They are particular about the personal hygiene & going for regular bath, nail cutting, hair cutting, wearing washed cloths & keeping good health. By conducting extra-curricular activities as per their choice encouraging them to determine the field of career as per their liking however they are realise that to go for their selected field & they will have to complete education in best possible manner. Their level of confidence is boosted. They often interact with teachers, supportive staff & classmates with courage and confidence. In various extracurricular activities they participate with great enthusiasm & spirit.

After starting Mission education activities, the remarkable impact seen was that the tender aged girls dragged into child prostitution was totally stopped and the small boys forcibly brought into activities of pimps also totally ended. Over the period of 20 years some children of this community have completed their graduation in engineering, commerce etc. and secured good jobs and removed their mothers from ungraceful profession of prostitution and brought the stability and happiness and stability in the family.
